The Actor

© 2006 Words and Music by Mark B. Sostrin

< Verse >

A man sat in ragged clothes and watched the people pass

Pleading to them with his eyes and outstretched hand

Some gave little some gave more most turned and walked away

Said God bless you wish you well never bothered to learn his name

< Chorus >

What a scene this actor made traveling town to town

Gave everyone a part to play and it seemed so real somehow

Always same wherever he’d go different faces different names

Played the role some mother’s son without family or friend

< Verse >

At night he slept on the street outside the grand hotel

Warm air rising from the fan to keep him from the chill

No one offered him a bed or coat to keep him warm

Stepping round tried not to stare as they hurried to their homes

< Chorus >

< Instrumental Break – 1 Verse >

< Verse >

You have so much living here this man has so little

Everyday begging on the street for crumbs from your table

Last scene in heaven before the Lord a great multitude of souls

Depart from me I never knew you the actor’s voice was cold
